Assistive Technology / Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Welcome to the Assistive Technology / Augmentative and Alternative Communication Page

Assistive technology (AT) is any technology used to enable individuals to perform tasks that are difficult or impossible due to disabilities. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is the supplementation or replacement of natural speech and/or writing using aided and/or unaided symbols. In order to assist its 23 member districts in St. Clair County in meeting the special needs of their students who require AT and AAC, BASSC provides a specialized team consisting of certified speech-language pathologists and an assistive technology assistant. This team provides specialized supports, training, and direct and consultative services to students and staff. BASSC also has an AT Lending Library with over 300 different items available for loan.

Request for Assistance forms are available for students who are new to AT/AAC or a new concern has occurred that requires consultation.

Teacher and Parent Loan forms are available for items that are checked out of the AT Lending Library. These items may be checked out annually to students or staff or the items may be loaned as a result of a recent consultation or evaluation.
